Do we have De-Caf Coffee beans ?
The short answer is NO. The reason is based on the concept of compromise. Would Liquid Velvet compromise our dedication to absolute quality to accommodate a very small market demand. Again the short answer is NO.
Let me explain. Roasted Coffee has a limited shelf life and as a whole bean that shelf life is limited to a few days. once you grind those beans its goes down to minutes. So for us to hold de-caf would mean that we would be offering old stale ground coffee to our customers and that is not a compromise that we at Liquid Velvet are not prepared to make. Remember to offer de-caf we would have to have a dedicated de-caf grinder to at least lengthen the life a little. how many cafe's have a dedicated de-caf grinder?
If you are concerned about caffeine content remember caffeine is present in many beverages including tea, chocolate,Coca Cola,cold/flu medications.
The content of cafefine in espressed coffee is relatively low although the consumer seems to think because of the depth of flavour ( the hit) that it must be excessive. that is not true, for example the cheaper robusta bean that is common in blended beans from some cafes and mobile operators and in instant is approximately 50% more caffeine laden that the supreme quality Arabica.
If you are one of the unfortunate people that reacts badly to caffeine I recommend the following when you want a coffee.
- Ask the Barista/manager how long do you keep the de-caf coffee ( seriously look them in the eye and ask when they got that batch in)
- Do you grind per cup or are you buying pre-ground ( do not buy a espresso from a pre-ground bag it will be BAD.......
- Is the de-caf 'swiss water treated' or chemically de-cafed. only use water treated de-caf
- Think about a single shot in normal cup maybe a mocha as at least it will have some flavour.
Special events or requests we have no problem in sourcing de-caf for our clients and we will ensure that it is the highest quality and freshest available.
We sympathise with the de-caf drinker but we are if anything honest in what we do, we will tell you where and when our coffee is roasted and the origin.
In Fact a recent study in the US has shown that Decaffeinated coffee can be harmful to consumers with elevated LDL levels.
"To their surprise, the researchers found the decaffeinated group had experienced an 18% rise in NEFAs in the blood and an 8% rise in apolipoprotein B - a protein associated with a cholesterol linked to cardiovascular disease. This was not seen in the other two groups" *The research was presented at the American Heart Association Sessions 2005, held in Dallas, Texas
